Cable Protection Systems

Fibre glass – a very special material

BIW processes different types of fibre glass yarns and twines to hoses, cords, ribbons and seals using the textile glass technology. They are used in all different sectors. As an alternative to plaiting machines, modern knitting and warp knitting machines are available so that there are virtually no limits for the type of construction. In particular for insulation and protection hoses there is an increasing variety due to the fact that many different techniques and materials are used for impregnation, coating and sheathing of the fabric structure. Along with treatment in the liquid phase (infusion, impregnation) BIW realises a unique solid rubber coating with elastomers in the extrusion process.

Fibre glass is a key material primarily used in braided and knitted structures and provides the following benefits:

  • High mechanical strength (the specific strength = tensile strength (mass density) of textile glass is higher than of steel)
  • Temperature resistance (high temperatures up above +500°C)
  • Fire resistance (fibre glass as a mineral material is non-combustible)
  • Electric properties (fibre glass has excellent insulating properties already with a small material thickness)
  • Dimensional stability (the low thermal expansion coefficient provides for minimal influence in the event of variations in temperature and humidity)
  • Low thermal conductivity (prevents thermal bridges and ensures a high temperature delta)
  • Good chemical resistance and almost no ageing
  • Compatibility with organic substances (can be ideally combined with elastomer materials such as silicone, acrylic, PU by different type of dressing)
  • No detrimental effects to the environment and water
  • Non-toxic, non-carcinogenic, not respirable.

BIW’s in-house textile processing technology allows of course the utilisation also of other filaments and fibres, such as

  • Aramid (carbon fibre) for improved tensile strength with low elongation
  • Basalt fibre or quartz glass for increased temperature requirements
  • Polyester or polyamide (PA6.6) for high abrasion resistance with high dynamic load capacity
