PREVENTING MARTEN ATTACKS IN VEHICLES AND PV SYSTEMS CAUTION, BITING ATTACKS! THE FINDINGS OF A RECENT STUDY SHOW HOW YOU CAN PROTECT CABLES Stone martens cause damage amounting to around 100 million euros every year. The predators damage over 200,000 vehicles every year. This phenomenon is affecting almost all car drivers. Stone martens tend to live in towns and residential areas. Marten- repellent materials provide the best protection against marten attacks. This is the finding of a study by the Hankensbüttel Otter Centre GN Nature Conservation Group. The appropriate cover avoids marten damage complete. Frequently, this results in the total failure of the PV system or – if bitten – increased resistance. This leads to a loss of yield, and the cable will also heat up, causing a risk of fire. PROTECTING LINES FROM MARTEN ATTACKS BIW supplies a range of systems for the automotive industry and energy sector, which combine the protection of cables against marten attacks with other mechanical and thermal properties. Our products can also protect garden hoses and garden wiring – for instance for outdoor sockets or lighting systems – and much more. Many products can also be retrofitted with the BIW range of marten protection hoses. COMPACT ›› CONTINUATION OF THE COVER FEATURE The study finds: no bite marks How resistant are hoses fitted with a line protection against marten attacks? The research team compared the BIW marten protection hoses with commercially available unprotected electrical cables under real-life conditions. There were six assess- ment categories: (1) zero, (2) slight and (3) serious bite marks, (4) minor destroyed points, (5) less than 50 % of the area fully destroyed and (6) over 50 % of the area fully destroyed. The findings were unequivocal: the protected sheaths were rated as category 1 (zero bite marks), while the commercial systems were rated as categories 5 and 6. You can find a table with images documenting the study results and further information in our flyer about protecting against martens. As an all-rounder in the silicone processing sector, BIW is constantly seeking out interesting fields of business and helping customers to develop and find solutions with its own innovations. BIW is pleased to be part of a successful ABUS Group product. ABUS approached BIW in 2012, as it was located nearby. It was looking for a product for motorcycle/scooter locks that would visually enhance the lock, while at the same time protecting the lock casing and the vehicle in question against damage. Together, the companies successfully developed a product which has been in use for over ten years. Over the years, both companies have generated continuous growth volumes. The range of colours is also constantly being expanded. BIW is always interested in expanding its fields of business, both with small and large series. Thanks to its strong development department, the company is capable of developing and producing products for specific applications – from the material composition and properties, to the geometry and subsequent finishing of the product. With over 50 years of experience, BIW can access a broad-based range of solutions and rapidly support its customers with solution-based approaches. Get in touch with us if you also have an application and require support in the development of a suitable product – whether it is a silicone extrudate, silicone moulding, or a cable protection system.
